Laura Konttinen: A Backdrop
mdf-board

Students of Tampere Polytechnic

The public space is full of social, psychological and concrete structures that define the way we are, move and behave. In the limelights of the city, a constant play is acted out and our public roles are rehearsed from early childhood. I am interested in the differences between the private and the public - silently set boundaries and patterns that enable modern urban interaction and behaviour. The blank backdrop is a symbolic gesture that questions the scripted use and experience of public space.

A Backdrop can be found in the Hakaniemi subway station.

What happens, when there is no more love? What happens to one´s Self, who is too restless to stay put? What happens when I stop feeling anything towards It? Do I dare to leave something, that´s good to me, behind? Do I have the courage to make up my mind, am I ready to let go of It? What will happen to me?

I did my share of paperwork in bureaux by folding birds to hang on the sealing of a waitingroom. There is japanese saying that folding thousand origamicranes would make a wish come true but I didn't count my birds as I forgot what I was wishing for.
